    Abstract The idea of Doppler laser cooling, suggested in 1976, was found very attractive because of the very low ‘limit’ temperatures expected: 120 microkelvin for cesium, 40 microkelvin for metastable helium... After the first experimental realisation in 1985 supporting these expectations, more precise measurements found even lower temperatures. The actual record is 2.5 microkelvin for cesium and the corresponding new mechanisms (polarisation gradient molasses) have been understood: they are expected to lead to a temperature corresponding to a few ‘one-photon recoil energy’ (0.2 microkelvin for Cs, 4 microkelvin for He). This ‘limit’ itself has been broken, in the case of metastable helium, thanks to a completely different method: Velocity Selective Coherent Population Trapping. We have been able to reach a 1D velocity distribution corresponding to 2 microkelvin.
