The authors show that chemical reactions are the major intrinsic degradation mechanisms in high-performance organic light emitting devices. The resulting reaction products create deep traps, non-radiative recombination centers, and luminescence quenchers in organic devices. The main reaction pathways, induced by excitons are fragmentations, oligomerizations, and complexations. They show that laser-desorbed mass spectroscopy can be used as a predictive method to compare different materials in terms ofthe expected lifetime for OLEDs.
