In recent electromechanical and mechatronical systems, the complexity is continuously increasing due to a large amount of external actuators driven by power stages. This results in an increasing number of cable connections. Consequently, according to the laws of reliability theory, this rises the number of possible malfunctions and thus endangers the availability of vehicles. In order to compensate this increased risk of malfunction due to the high complexity, the control devices have to implement fall back strategies and emergency modes which are based on reliable hardware diagnosis. These fall back strategies improve the availability and prevent secondary damage. This work describes the cabling diagnosis concepts applied in state of the art devices including a discussion of the deficits of today's approaches. Furthermore, it proposes an improved driver implementation delivering improved diagnosis capabilities while reducing the evaluation effort within the control algorithms.
