The development and performance features of De Ronde type of broadband directional couplers using microstrip-microslot combination are reported. The first type is the strip-slot 3-dB hybrid-line coupler. C-Band couplers with a bandwidth of 56% and isolation better than 22 dB and X-band couplers with a bandwidth of 42% and isolation better than 18 dB have been developed. Excellent phase characteristics for the signal at the direct and coupled ports have been obtained. The second type is a broad-band coupler which uses the principles of continuous coupling between the interacting microstrip and the slot line. The coupler uses a double-junction microstrip-microslot transition, which has been optimized to operate over 1 to 10 GHz with an insertion loss of less than 0.4 dB. Couplers operating over a frequency range 3.2 to 10 GHz with a minimum directivity of 15 dB have been developed.
