    In der Quanteninformationsverarbeitung werden Quanteneigenschaften wie Überlagerungen und Verwirbelungen genutzt, wie es in klassischen Bauelementen nicht möglich ist. Ein langfristiges Ziel ist die experimentelle Verwirbelung großer Quantenprozessoren, da das reine Quantenverhalten nur bei einzelnen lasergekühlten Atomen und einzelnen Photonen möglich ist. Neuere theoretische und experimentelle Fortschritte zeigen, dass kalte Atome und einzelne Photonen für größere Quantenprozessoren wichtig sein könnten.
