    Hauptziel der Quanteninformatik ist die Abbildung der eigentlichen Quanteninformation zwischen einem stabilen Quantenspeicher und einem zuverlässigen Kanal für die Quantenkommunikation. Dies könnte die Quantenkommunikation über weite Entfernungen, die Quantenteleportation der Materie oder einen Quantencomputer mit Quanteninternet ermöglichen. Da Quantenzustände im allgemeinen nicht kopierbar sind, kann die Quanteninformation in diesen oder anderen Anwendungen nur verteilt werden durch eine Verknäulung des Quantenspeichers mit dem Kommunikationskanal. Berichtet wird nun von Quantenverknäulung zwischen einem idealen Quantenspeicher - einem 111-Cd(+)-Ion - und einem idealen Quantenkommunikationskanal, was von einem einzelnen Photon erzeugt wird, das spontan von dem genannten Ion emittiert wird. Koinzidenzmessungen zwischen den Quantenzuständen der Photonenpolarisation und dem eingefangenen Ionenspeicher werden zur Verifizierung der Verknäulung eingesetzt. Die direkte Beobachtung der Verknäulung zwischen stationären und fliegenden Qubits wird ohne Techniken der Quantenelektrodynamik oder nichtklassischen Lichtquellen realisiert. Diese Art der Verknäulung kann für eine breite Palette an Quantenkommunikationsprotokollen und einem möglichen Quantencomputer verwendet werden.
