Efficient and well controlled processes are required for the production of silicon steels with desired magnetic properties and core-loss values. Lowering down of carbon to very low level is essential to prevent magnetic aging which deteriorates electrical properties of these steels. Lowest possible range of sulphur and nitogen are other important requirements for minimising the core-losses. In addition, inclusion distribution, content and shape are also of significance. To understand the individual mechanisms that take place during inclusion generation, their interaction with steel, refractories, slag and atmosphere, and their removal from or retention in the steel, it is necessary to take into account the time-dependent interactions that occur during steel processing. This holistic approach requires a step by step analysis of the changing element concentration and temperature gradients in the steel, taking into account the effect of fluid flow, and the stability of the resulting inclusions.
