A meter based on CCD for a high-temperature dilatometer is described. It consists of two contactless displacement transducers (CDT), the left-hand and right-hand ones, with the faces of the specimen projected on the CCD. The output signal from each CCD is a sequence of 500 pulses, which contain information on the position of the specimen edge. These pulses represent an electrical image for the illumination on the CCD cells. Diffraction and low contrast in the image mean that the light-dark and dark-light transitions cover two or three cells. The pulses pass to the displacement signal shaper (DSS), where they are processed. The algorithm provides a measurement error less by an order of magnitude than the cell pitch.
