Leibniz Association's Open Access Publishing Fund: Monographs
Central funding for scholarly monographs and book chapters written or edited by members of the Leibniz Association.
Leibniz Funding for Monographs
Leibniz Open Access Publishing Fund for Monographs is a pilot project and will be running until the end of June 2024. The fund provides financial support to cover Book Processing Charges (BPCs). The project aims to evaluate the BPC business model and to develop standards for the funding of open access books suitable for the Leibniz Association and its institutes. It is being financed by the Executive Board's strategic fund.
The project and its team is led by the IDS, cooperating partners are DIE, DIPF, IfZ, TIB, WZB, ZBW and ZfL.
The fund is centrally managed by the Technische Informationsbibliothek (TIB) in Hanover, funding requests are assessed by two members of the project team, the IDS deals with the financial transactions.

Funding criteria (last updated January 2020)
The fund provides financial support for scholarly monographs or book chapters published open access via the gold route (Book Processing Charges, BPC). In order to receive funding you have to meet the following criteria:
Type of Publication
- Open Access Monograph
- Open Access Edited Volume
- Article in an open-access edited volume
- Original Publication
- The open access publication may be accompanied by a print-edition; publication costs for print will not be supported
Application
- The author / editor is employed by an institution of the Leibniz Association
- Application will be submitted online and shall be considered in order of submission until resources are used up
Quality Management
- The manuscript has passed a system of quality management approved within its discipline (peer-review, editors review, editorial work etc.)
- Dissertations must have been marked ‘magna cum laude’ or higher
Availability
- The publication will be made publicly available on a repository free of charge and without any legal or technical restrictions or barriers
- The open-access-edition will be published prior or simultaneously with the print edition
- Both the open-access-edition and the print-edition are marked as open-access-publication; the print-edition must contain an explicit reference to the open-access-edition
- All marketing of the publisher contains information on the open-access-edition of the book
- The publication is listed in the German National Library
- The book's metadata should be listed in DOAB, OAPEN and other relevant databases
- The publication is listed in LeibnizOpen
- The book shall be published within six months after granting funding; costs will be reimbursed only after publication
Rights & Licenses
- The publication shall be published under a CC-licence (recommend CC BY)
- Authors should grant the publisher a non-exclusive licence
- Rights for pictures and other material are held by the authors
- Information on open access and cc-licences is visible in the copyright page of both the book and the open-access-edition
Metadata & Copyright
- Metadata contain: title, authors, editors, ORCID (if available), publication date, publisher, volume number, serial title, persistent identifier (DOI or URN), ISBN (if available), creative commons licence, abstract, key-words
- The copyright page contains a statement on the support by the Leibniz Association's Open Access Publishing Fund
Publisher
- The publisher provides a transparent calculation that indicates the open-access costs
- The publisher should be listed in the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB) and/or the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA)
Funding
- Books can be funded with max. 4.500 EUR (incl. 19% VAT)
- Additional funding is available (max. 1.500 EUR):
- Module 1: additional costs for extensive manuscripts or a large number of tables and graphics
- Module 2: licences for pictures (invoices must be provided)
- Articles in edited books can be funded with max. 2.000 EUR (incl. 19% VAT)
- Funding can be combined with other funds
Not Eligible for Funding
- Costs for print-editions
- Articles in edited books that not appear completely open access
- Final papers (Bachelor-, Master-, Magister-, Diplomarbeiten)
Application process
- As the book's author or editor you can apply for funding using the form provided on this website.
- You may submit your application as soon as you have contacted a publisher.
- Applications will be dealt with on a first come, first served basis until the project funds are exhausted.
- Following the submission the TIB will do a formal check. Two members of the project team will subsequently assess compliance with the funding criteria.
- If your publication meets the funding criteria you will be notified by email. Should your publication not meet the funding criteria the TIB will contact you.
- Costs can only be reimbursed on presentation of a publishers invoice that clearly and transparently itemises the open access publication costs.
- Funding offers are valid for 6 months.
- If the funded work has not been published by the end of this period, a new application for funding will be necessary.
