Wiley journals – free Open Access publishing

On behalf of Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH), the TIB participates in the nationwide DEAL agreement with the Wiley science publishing house. This offers scientists at LUH new opportunities to publish their research results in Open Access.

The contract will initially run until December 2021.

What does this mean for you as a researcher at LUH?

  • From 1 July 2019, you will be publishing your articles in most Wiley journals Open Access without incurring any personal costs.
  • The TIB will cover the costs.
  • Open Access will become the standard for LUH authors – without any further effort, you will continue to publish as usual.

The contract covers both the publisher's hybrid journals (so-called OnlineOpen) and genuine Open Access journals.

Which requirements must be fulfilled?

  • You are a scientist of the Leibniz Universität Hannover and submit the paper as Corresponding Author.
  • You must clearly state your institutional affiliation when submitting your paper.
  • Your article is primary research or a review article.
  • The article was accepted for publication on or after 1 July 2019 (only relevant for hybrid journals).

This is the procedure:

1. Hybrid journals („OnlineOpen")

As soon as the article has been accepted for publication, confirm the necessary details. The article must not have been accepted before 1 July 2019.

  1. Check the affiliation you provided when submitting the article. Please make sure that Leibniz Universität Hannover has been selected.
  2. After confirming the affiliation Leibniz Universität Hannover, Open Access should already be present (check the box "Yes, I would like to make my article OnlineOpen").
    • This will not incur any costs for you. The costs for publication are paid centrally by the TIB.
  3. Click "Confirm". The TIB will now be informed about your article and asked to confirm the payment.
    • Once the payment has been approved, you will receive confirmation by email. This may take no more than five days.
    • If the payment has been rejected, you will be informed by email. You can then either apply for funds elsewhere or publish the article in Closed Access without further costs.

If you are asked to grant a Creative Commons licence for your publication, please select CC BY.

2. Open Access journals

In the case of Open Access journals, you provide all the necessary information during the submission process.

  1. During submission, you will be asked to provide your payment details.
    • Enter "Third Party Funding" and in the next step select "Leibniz Universität Hannover" from the drop-down menu.
  2. The TIB will now be informed of your submission and asked to confirm the payment.
    • Once the payment has been approved, you will receive confirmation by email. This may take no more than five days.
    • If the payment has been rejected, you will have to apply for funds elsewhere. You will also receive a notification by email.

If you are asked to grant a Creative Commons licence for your publication, please choose CC BY if possible.

FAQ

No. Authors can also choose not to publish their work in Open Access. However, we strongly recommend that you accept the Open Access option.

If you meet the above requirements, rejection is unlikely. The TIB only checks whether your affiliation has been correctly registered by Wiley and correctly assigned to Leibniz Universität Hannover.

There may be no error. Wiley currently holds 178 journals that do not offer an Open Access option. For these titles, the DEAL contract only regulates read access.

The costs will then also be paid centrally by the TIB using special funds made availabel by LUH for a limited period of time for this particular purpose. Both institutions thus recognise the special significance of this first DEAL-agreement for the German scientific landscape. Nevertheless, the TIB reaffirms the importance of uniform and sustainable cost caps for Article Processing Charges.

Please choose Creative Commons Attribution License (CC BY).

That depends first of all on the journal in which you publish. Secondly, it depends on whether your institution has signed the contract.

  • Hybrid journals: If you publish in a hybrid journal and belong to one of the 700 scientific institutions listed here (Project DEAL Institutions), you publish in Open Access by default without personal costs. The national contract enables you to do this regardless of whether your institution participates in the contract and its costs or not.
  • Open Access journals: The situation is different for genuine OA journals, as the Article Processing Charges are not included in the basic costs of the contract. You should therefore inquire whether your institution has signed the contract and what local arrangements have been made for the transfer of the APCs (central payment or subsequent reallocation).
