Duration

1 November 2008 – 31 December 2011

Since 2002, vascoda has been financed from the merging of two funding schemes by the German Research Foundation and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in different sub-projects at various facilities throughout Germany. The vascoda portal was set up at www.vascoda.de as a central academic portal and a co-ordination office was established at the German National Library of Science and Technology. In September 2005, the participating libraries, library associations and specialised information facilities founded vascoda e.V. as the supporting association for the portal which was last operated by the hbz (Hochschulbibliothekszentrum des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen). vascoda e.v.’s headquarters and office are situated at the German National Library of Science and Technology in Hannover (Registration court: Amtsgericht Hannover, Register number: VR 200071).
Using modern search technologies, the vascoda portal has offered interdisciplinary search possibilities and has acted as an entry portal for the partners’ virtual libraries and specialised portals. In January 2011, the operation of the vascoda portal was suspended (see vascoda-Blog). At the beginning of November 2011, the members of vascoda.e.V. agreed upon the dissolution of the association by the end of 2011.

Description

Since November 2008 the German Research Foundation was funding the Project vascoda 2010 at the German National Library of Science and Technology. Original aim of the project was the functional and content expansion of the vascoda entry portal and the specialised portals.
The project report for the 01.11.2008 to 28.02.2010 report period (see below) gives an overview of the activities and achieved results in the first project year. With the release of the funds for the second project year, the German Research Foundation’s committee for academic libraries and information systems (AWBI) recommended that vascoda e.V. focus on the areas of co-ordination, knowledge transfer, strategic support and marketing for the participating specialised portals, along with the corresponding adjustment of the project contents. However, the continuation of the vascoda academic portal was actually not recommended. As part of the project, the interests of the vascoda e.V.’s members with regard to new task foci had been ascertained in the summer of 2010 (see also the project report for the report period 01.03.2010 to 31.12.2010); in the main, the members had agreed to the AWBI’s recommendation for a reorientation, but a suitable collaborative and sustainable financing model could not be found and this then resulted in the dissolution of the association as mentioned above.

The following objectives were to be realised until December 2011:

  • New implementation of the hbz’s Linkresolver Gateway (OpenURL-GW) as a central service for the availability check in specialised portals; detachment of this service from the existing portal environment, as well as the creation of an administration interface for the inputting and managing of data in the Linkresolver Gateway
  • The setting-up of a weblog as part of the Webis information system which will act as a continuation of the current vascoda-Blog

Within the framework of vascoda 2010, the TIB is collaborating with the hbz – the university library centre of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, with the state and university library of Hamburg, as well as with all members of the vascoda association.
