HNBR in roller Covers for Extreme Conditions - HNBR has proven its value in many technical rubber products. For roll covers, however, a low viscosity of compounds is required for adequate processing along with high hardness after cure.
Quality Assurance of Fibre Reinforced Plastics Composites by Ultrasound Backscattering - The ultrasonic backscattering method can be applied to determine the fibre orientation in reinforced plastics (FRP). In the following paper the potentials of ultrasonic backscattering for quality assurance are presented and the possible angular resolution is analyzed. For the investigation of the influence parameters new models for sound dispersion in FRP were developed. Theoretical model calculations were compared with results of practical tests. After this the parameters were selected in such a way that existing fibre orientations could be determined with well predictable uncertainties. Further application areas of application of ultrasonic backscattering are the improved detection of fibre cracks and pores.
Effects of Poly-isobutylene-co-p-methylstyrene Structure on Properties of a Tire Black Sidewall Compound - When BIMS polymers are used in black sidewall compounds of passenger tyres, antidegradants can be eliminated because as the BIMS-polymer is inherently resistant against detrimental effects of ozone, oxygen, light and other environmental factors. In order to also ensure optimum physical properties in such sidewall compounds, the percentage of methylstyrene units and the bromine content of the BIMS copolymer have to be appropriately adjusted.
Silicone-Masterbatch-Additives for Improved Processing of Plastics - For many years, silicone oils have been used in the processing of thermoplastics as external and internal lubricants. In spite of desired results obtained in many polymers and applications, certain difficulties have prevented a widespread use. In order to counteract such problems, Dow Coming has recently introduced the MB 50 series of silicone masterbatches to the European market. These are pelletized materials with a 50 % content of migration stable, high molecular silicones in different plastics, such as PP, PE, HIPS, POM, ABS, PA 6 etc.
Improved Adhesion Properties of Plastics via Gas Phase Fluorination - Synthetic materials with a low surface energy can firmly be bonded together after a gas-phase fluoridation. By the gasification with a fluorine-nitrogen mixture the wettability and thus the absorption of glues will considerably be improved. The effect of the treatment could be proven for amorphous PET, PP without primer, NR, CR and EPDM with different glues. In contrast to other industrial pretreatment procedures the gas phase fluorination can be carried out by out-door custom-treatment because the activation state is not limited by time.
