Second-order non-linear optical polymers - Feature Article - The state-of-the-art in the field of second-order non-linear optical (NLO) polymers is discussed in detail. Special emphasis is put on analytical techniques, sample preparations for characterization, electro-optical measurements and future aspects. A representative selection of polymers is presented to underline the most important contributions made to this field. A schematic representation of individual NLO chromophores distributed along the net dipole moment of a polymer chain is shown in the FigureSamyn, C. et al. | 2000

Formation of superlattices via blending of block copolymers - Feature Article: The morphologies of di- and triblock copolymers as well as the self-assembly of different copolymer blends are reviewed. Blends show similar phases to those observed for pure block copolymers, and additional new types of morphologies, such as periodic noncentrosymmetrically lamellar and multiple-gyroid interface structures, are observed. One example is the "ticker tape, structure of a binary blend of a poly(styrene-b-butadiene-b-methyl methacrylate) (SBM) mixture with a BSM polymer shown in the FigureAbetz, V. et al. | 2000

Solubility enhancement for poly(amic acid)s by rapid hydrolysis of the polymer main chain during alkaline development - Communication - In an alkaline developer, carboxylic groups-containing polymer films show a higher critical carboxylic group concentration (CGC0), above which dissolution occurs, compared with novolac resins. A new approach to reduce CGC0 by introducing an ester moiety, which undergoes saponification in the alkaline developer within the timescale of developing, is presented (see Scheme). Polymers with moderate dissolution rates and a lower tendency to swell are obtained. The fast degradation of the polymer is verified by GPC dataMaekawa, Y. et al. | 2000

First example of the topochemical polymerization of the (EE)-muconic acid derivative - Communication - The naphthylmethylammonium salts of (Z.Z)- and (E,E)-muconic acid are investigated with respect to their photopolymerization in the crystalline state. This reaction produces stereoregular polymers in high yields. The stereochemical structure of both polymers is identical, namely meso-diisotactic-trans-2,5-configuration (see Scheme, XOdani, T. et al. | 2000

Polymer monolayers with a photosensitive crown ether - Communication - The mixed monolayers of photosensitive crown ether (CE) and poly(maleic acid hexadecyl monoamide-alt-propylene) (P12) are investigated. The fluorescence of CE exhibits a strong emission band around 530 nm in solution and around 595 nm in aggregated monolayers. This maximum is shifted to 530-540 nm in the mixed monolayers. The Figure shows the fluorescence spectra for transferred films obtained at different surface pressures: 10 mN-m (1), 40 niN-m (2) (3% CE in mixed layers); 10 mN-m (3) and 40 mN-m (4) for pure CEBaryshnikova, E.A. et al. | 2000

Synthesis and controlled polymerization of p-(1-methylcyclohexyloxy)styrene and quick-responsible deblocking ability of the obtained polymer - Communication - Acid-catalyzed addition reaction of p-bromophenol with 1-methyl-cyclohexene, followed by nickel-catalyzed Grignard coupling with vinyl bromide affords the title monomer (PC6ST). PC6ST undergoes radical polymerization to yield poly(PC6ST) with narrow molecular weight distribution. The comparison of TGA and DSC data of poly(PC6ST) with those obtained from poly(p-tert-butoxystyrene) is presented in the Figure. Effects of block architecture and composition on the association properties of poly(oxyalkylene) copolymers in aqueous solution - Feature Article: Recent studies of the micellization behavior of amphiphilic block copolymers in water are reviewed. Block copolymers of ethylene oxide with propylene oxide, 1,2-butylene oxide or styrene are discussed with focus on synthetic aspects. Analytical techniques determining the critical conditions for micellization, aggregation number and micellar radii are summarized. The effects of temperature, composition, block length and polymer architecture (some examples are shown in the Scheme) are described and compared with theoretical predictionsBooth, C. et al. | 2000

Ring-opening polycondensations - Feature Article: Ring-opening polycondensation of heterocycles is a new strategy of polymer synthesis. The polycondensation of tin- and silicon-containing heterocycles is described with emphasis on recent reports. The copolycondensation of silylated and stannylenated monomers is presented, which produces multiblock copolyesters with complex phase behavior (see DSC curves)Kricheldorf, H.R. et al. | 2000

A new approach to control crystallinity of resulting polymers: Self-condensing ring opening polymerization - Communication: The cationic ring-opening polymerization of 3-methyl-3-oxetane-methanol is initiated by BF3.Et2O. A low catalyst-monomer ratio yields an almost completely linear polymer, whereas hyperbranched polymers are obtained with high catalyst-monomer ratios. While the hyperbranched polymer is amorphous, the linear one is partially crystalline. Degree of branching and crystallinity is therefore controlled by the catalyst-monomer ratio. DSC curves of three polymers (the degree of branching increases from sample 1 to 3) are shown in the FigureYan, D. et al. | 2000

The effect of the amido substituent on polymer molecular weight in propene homopolymerisation by titanium cyclopentadienyl-amide catalysts - Communication: Different titanium cyclopentadienyl-amide catalysts (see Scheme) are studied with respect to their influence on the molecular weight of the resulting polymer. In the systems under investigation, the catalyst with the smallest substituent R gives rise to the highest molecular weight, which is in contrast to usually observed tendencies for related catalyst systems. Based on this result an increased ionic interaction for the less sterically demanding system is proposed, which explains the disfavoring of chain transfer relative to chain propagationSinnema, P.-J. et al. | 2000

Thermo-responsive behavior of novel polyitaconates having pyrrolidinonyl moiety - Communication: Novel poly(methyl itaconates) bearing pyrrolidinonyl groups are prepared by either photopolymerizing the functionalized precursors or by redox polymerization. Mechanistic investigation of the formation of epoxy resin multi-hollow spheres prepared by a phase inversion emulsification technique - Communication: Micrometer-sized multi-compartmental epoxy resin spheres (see SEM micrograph) are prepared by phase-inversion emulsion polymerization. The formation mechanism of the spheres is studied by causing incomplete phase inversion during the synthesis. The prerequisite to the formation is an irreversible coalescence between water droplets under shear before the phase inversion point. This process is facilitated by lower emulsifier concentration and a higher emulsification temperature. A theoretical explanation of the phenomenon is presentedYang, Z. et al. | 2000

The ability of DVBPO to copolymerize with MMA is proven by DSC data as well as the occurrence of crosslinking. In addition, butyl acrylate is grafted onto the copolymer.
