Sanitation Control Corp, Bristol, Conn, occupied 4000-sq ft of space used primarily as truck maintenance and garage facility; illumination level was about 5 ft-c and workmen used flashlights to see what they were doing; when additional 3000-sq ft of manufacturing space was under construction, new lighting installation was planned; new area uses medium-beam mercury luminaires with 400-w improved-color lamps which have strong uplighting component, revealing ceiling with resulting improvement in contrast ratios; 18 units are mounted flush with ceiling at 14 ft and located 12 ft on center; designed for 100 ft-c, installed system provided 118 ft-c uniformly over entire space; after year of operation, with no maintenance at all, system still provided 98 ft-c.
