Test results with 7075T6 aluminum sheet specimens were used to develop stress criterion for unstable crack propagation; unstable propagation occurred when effective stress at crack root reached engineering ultimate strength; fracture data were obtained from tests on flat plate, cylindrical, and spherical vessels fabricated from wide variety of materials; it is shown that failure conditions of these materials can be predicted from their mechanical properties, namely, ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, and Charpy V notch energy.
