    The efficient computation of principal directions such as tangents, normals or orthonormal frames, is a common requirement of many graphics algorithms analysing and processing point sets. The techniques mostly used in practice are statistical in nature. Principal Components Analysis (PCA) [Jol02] is the most widely used method, while Independent Component Analysis (ICA) [HKO01] has also been used. These two techniques are computationally efficient, numerically stable and robust in the presence of data noise. However, they cannot always adequately characterise the geometric structure of the point set data.
