FEATURE - ON THE TRAIL OF LEGENDS: SEARCHING FOR ANCIENT RUINS EAST OF THE ANDES - Traipsing through the dense, uncharted jungles of South America guided by little more than native wisdom can be exciting and rewarding, but if you ever want to retrace your steps, document your finds, or relocate a discovery, GPS can certainly make the job easier. One explorer searching for signs of ancient civilizations in Peru and Brazil found that when he combined GPS with available (although incomplete) maps, satellite photos, and the knowledge of his native guides, the fruits of his labor became all that much sweeter. Not only did his group travel farther and deeper into the jungle, they also documented previously undiscovered ruins and pinpointed the locations of rarely seen landmarksDeyermenjian, Gregory et al. | 1999

ARTICLE - DRIVING 911: GPS ROAD MAPS ENHANCE RESPONSE - Efficient 911 emergency services require accurate digital maps. The Queen's Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Lab, a university-based GIS service provider, therefore employed a vehicle-mounted GPS datalogger to update and augment the digital map database for Bell Canada, a telecommunications company offering 911 services in Ontario and Quebec. Project members also developed a two-pass mapping method and specialized software to automatically compute the road centerlines, streamlining the entire processHauschildt, Peg et al. | 1999
