Although high-silicon steel is extremely brittle and difficult to cold-roll, research proved that thermomechanical processing is possible under special conditions of temperatures and rolling: It is possible to obtain steel with silicon up to 6.5 % Si and a thickness below 0.5 mm. The effect of thermomechanical cycles on the ordering phenomena was studied and this is believed to be responsible for the brittle behaviour. High Si-steel was also produced through hot dipping in a Al-Si-bath and subsequent diffusion annealing in order to introduce Si and/or Al into the substrate, with a homogeneous concentration or a gradient, depending on the annealing cycle.
