A new poling procedure is demonstrated on a commercial ferroelectric (PZT PIC 151). The new method shows that the poling field E* could considerably reduced, depending on the magnitude of the radial compressive stress applied to the sample. Complete D-E loops show that a reduction of coercive field Ec can also be obtained, when measured under the same conditions as with poling. With the successful poling being one of the major difficulties encountered with new lead-free ferroelectrics, the technique presented in this work may offer an opportunity to surmount them and thus may enable the broad adoption of those materials for actuation or sensor applications.
