Influence of strain and heat loss on flame stabilization in a non-adiabatic combustor (English)

The present study demonstrates how the simulation of swirl-stabilized flames can be improved by including the effects of heat loss in combination with strain into turbulent combustion models. The combined influence of these effects generates the reduction of reaction rate and can eventually lead to quenching of the flame. Laminar flame strained opposed flow simulations with detailed chemistry were done in order to calculate the laminar flame speed in dependency on strain and heat loss. Based on the results, an empirical correlation for the consumption speed of a strained laminar flame based on terms of Markstein number, Karlovitz number and non-dimensional heat loss parameter was proposed. This idea was integrated into the TFC combustion model by introducing the obtain correlation for the laminar flame speed, and then validated against experiments. Simulations using the original TFC (turbulent flame speed Closure) model present a flame stabilized incorrectly at both shear layers creating a much shorter flame than in experiments and with a different spatial heat release distribution. With the implementation of the extended TFC model with only the effects from strain in the CFD (computational fluid dynamics) calculations, the flame stabilized also at both shear layers. Nevertheless, when both effects of strain and heat losses are taken into account in the model, it is possible to get a flame that exhibits the correct stabilization behaviour only at the inner shear layer with a flame length similar to the experiments. The present idea can be also applied to other turbulent combustion models that take into account the laminar flame speed as input parameter.
