The paper discusses the possibilities of the application of numerical methods in mechanics. The author presents some of his findings referring to the introduction of boundary element method into engineering practice as a parallel to the more commonly used finite element method. The emphasis is given on the comparison of the two methods. In practice the question of how to estimate the accuracy of results always remains unresolved. One of the possible answers to this question can be found in the comparison of the two methods.
