RV Sonne SO119, May 12 - June 10, 1997, Muscat -Muscat, Cruise Report (English)

The present cruise of the RV SONNE (SO 119) is the fourth in the series of cruises by German Research Vessels METEOR and SONNE sponsored by the Federal German Ministry for Education, Science and Research (BMBF, Bonn). These cruises form part of the ongoing German research activities in the Arabian Sea within the framework of the IGBPJGOFS (International Geosphere-Biosphere Program-Joint Global Ocean Flux Study) Process Study. The other cruises in the series are METEOR M32-3 and M32-5 in 1995 and SO 117 and SO 120 in 1997. The major objective of the IGBP-JGOFS Process Studies is to identify and understand marine biogeochemical processes that are of relevance in modulating the global climate. The focus is on processes which control the exchange of carbon and associated elements between the atmosphere and the ocean, between surface and deep waters as well as at the sediment-water interface. The data collected during the studies will be integrated into ocean and climate models. In addition to achieving the immediate goals set by the JGOFS, the results are likely to provide significant information on the functioning of the marine ecosystem as a whole and on its possible response to natural and human-induced global environmental changes.
