The exhibition "Herrenhausen und Europa – ein Gartennetzwerk“ (Herrenhausen and Europe – a garden network) offers visitors a special insight into the history of garden art from 17 March 2019 to 12 January 2020 in the Museum Schloss Herrenhausen.
For the exhibition, the TIB – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology is opening its unique Albrecht Haupt Collection, which consists of numerous books on the history, theory and art of architecture, around 6,800 historical drawings and prints as well as 6,000 travel sketches and study sheets by Haupt himself. Albrecht Haupt (1852-1932) made a name for himself as a freelance architect and building researcher, as a university lecturer and as a research traveller.
For ten months, a selection of around 130 exhibits – high-quality reproductions of historical plans and travel sketches as well as several original publications on garden history in showcases – can be seen in the Museum Schloss Herrenhausen: There are handmade travel sketches by Haupt as well as historical plans of gardens from the Netherlands, France, England, Germany and Austria, which illustrate the influence these gardens had on the princely summer residence of Herrenhausen.
The exhibition was created in cooperation with the Historisches Museum Hannover, the Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaft und Kunst Hildesheim/Holzminden/Göttingen (HAWK) and the TIB.
On display are the library treasures of the Haupt Collection from the 17th and 18th centuries, which are otherwise kept in a protected area with special spatial and conservation conditions in the TIB closed stacks. In regular guided tours by the curator – always on the first Sunday of the month at 11:30 – through the exhibition in the Museum Schloss Herrenhausen, visitors have the opportunity to get an impression of the extraordinary graphics, drawings and books.
