FAQ on restrictions and possibilities for the use of the TIB during the Corona crisis

In the following, we answer important questions in connection with the TIB's services, which continue to be restricted as a result of the COVID 19 pandemic. The measures are limited in time and are regularly adapted to the situation. Background information can be found in the FAQ "Why is TIB restricting its services?

This page is updated regularly. Status: 03 July 2020

Due to the current situation, on-site use of the library is only possible to a restricted extent:

As of 6 July 2020, the Circulation Desks at the Technik/Naturwissenschaften (Science/Technology)TIB Conti-Campus and TIB Sozialwissenschaften (Social Sciences) sites are open Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 20:00 for lending and returning items. The registration/cashier at these sites will also be open from 09:00 to 20:00 from Monday to Friday.

At the TIB Technology/Natural Sciences, TIB Conti-Campus, and TIB Social Sciences sites, restricted use of the reading rooms is now possible for all users from 09:00 to 20:00 from Monday to Friday.

The TIB Geschichte/Religionswissenschaft (History/Religious Studies) site will remain closed to the public.

To contain the COVID 19 pandemic, numerous regulations have been in place since March 2020, which also apply to the TIB. For the state of Lower Saxony in general, the "Niedersächsische Verordnung über infektionsschützende Maßnahmen gegen die Ausbreitung des Corona-Virus" is binding, which among other things formulates distance and hygiene requirements. The ordinance is updated in part at weekly intervals; the valid version can be found at https://www.niedersachsen.de/Coronavirus/vorschriften-der-landesregierung-185856.html. Further requirements, including the interpretation of the regulation, by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture must also be observed. This results, for example, in a reduced number of available workplaces in the TIB reading rooms and the obligation to document the contact details of users of the reading rooms.

Further restrictions result from the SARS-CoV-2 occupational safety standard. Due to the protection of employees, the full personnel capacity is not available on site, which has an impact on opening hours.

Finally, the terms of use continue to apply, which authorise the library to set opening hours and to close the library temporarily for compelling reasons (§ 11) and to earmark workplaces permanently or for a limited period (§ 16(3)). In its function as a university library, the TIB serves primarily to provide the university with literature and information (§ 2(3)). This applies in particular to the provision of workstations as learning space. It is also true that "the nature and scope of the services [...] depend on the library's tasks and on its staff, material and technical equipment" (§ 2(5)). No explicit task of the library, however, is its function as an internet café or quiet office.

The TIB recommends the following measures for library use on site to prevent infection and thus further spread of COVID-19: Wearing a mouth and nose protector is not required – but we strongly recommend it. Masks are obligatory on all ways within the user areas and when visiting the reading rooms at the TIB Technik/Naturwissenschaften (Science/Technology) site, TIB Conti-Campus site or the TIB Sozialwissenschaften (Social Science). However, in order to make learning as comfortable as possible for you, you can take off your mouth and nose protector at the workplaces.

Please understand that currently only a limited number of people have access to the circullation desks an to the reading rooms and that waiting times may therefore occur. In order to allow you access to the reading rooms, we have to record and store your personal data (PDF). If too many people wish to use the reading rooms, we will implement a process for registration/reservation for reading room use. Please note the information provided on site.

Please reduce your visits to the library to the necessary minimum and keep the appropriate distance in the rooms. Please pay attention to the existing markings in the entrance areas. Please remember that all measures mentioned are taken for your and our employees' protection. We ask for your understanding and for mutual consideration

Yes, items from the magazines and also from the open-shelf collections of all TIB sites must be ordered online, as they can only be picked up at the Circulation Desks.

At the TIB Technik/Naturwissenschaften (Science/Technology) and TIB Conti-Campus sites, access to the reading rooms is only possible for a limited number of people, so media must always be ordered online and collected from the Circulation Desk. Orders from the holdings of the TIB Geschichte/Religionswissenschaft (History/Regional Studies) site will be provided at the TIB Sozialwissenschaften (Social Sciences) site. It is also possible to reserve media that have already been borrowed online and to extend the loan periods of borrowed items.

Please note that it can take up to two days to make the items available: Therefore, please check your library account before you visit the library to make sure that the items you have ordered are available. To do this, please check your library account in the classic catalogue (OPAC), as for technical reasons the currently valid pick-up sites can only be shown there at present.

Customers of the TIB document delivery service can continue to order specialist and research literature from the areas of science and technology via the TIB portal as usual.

Yes, from 1 June 2020 you can place orders via interlibrary loan again without any restrictions.

Yes, this is now possible again, as long as there are no reservations from other parties for the media.

You can return your borrowed items to us quickly and easily and without personal contact. To return items, please place them in the designated spaces in the foyer of the TIB Technik/Naturwissenschaften (Science/Technology), TIB Sozialwissenschaften (Social Sciences) and TIB Conti-Campus sites.

We kindly ask you to check your library account afterwards to ensure that the items have been returned correctly. Please bear in mind that we will need some handling time for this.

The right to use the library has been automatically extended to 31 July 2020 for all users with a TIB library card that expired after 1 January 2020 or that will expire over the next three months.

In all other cases please contact us during the opening hours of the registration on site.

Yes, please use the TIB's online registration and then contact us at the Registration Desk during the opening hours on site.
