FAQ on restrictions and possibilities for the use of the TIB during the closure

In the following we answer important questions in connection with the closure of the TIB as a measure to contain the spreading COVID-19 infections. Despite the closure of our locations to the public, we are still here for you online and by phone.

This page is updated regularly. Status: 18 May 2020

Due to the current situation, on-site use of the library is only possible to a restricted extent:

The Circulation Desks at the and TIB Conti-Campus an TIB Sozialwissenschaften (Social Sciences) sites are open Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 15:00 for lending and returning items. The Registration Desk is open at both sites Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 12:00.

Due to staff shortages, the Circulation Desk at the TIB Technik/Naturwissenschaften (Science/Technology) site will be open from 2 June 2020 only from 13:00 to 15:00 until further notice. The registration desk/cash desk will be closed on these days.

At the TIB Conti-Campus site, limited use of the reading room for members of Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH) will be possible – mondays to fridays from 9:00 to 15:00. The reading rooms at the other TIB sites will remain closed to the public.

The TIB recommends the following measures for library use on site to prevent infection and thus further spread of COVID-19: Wearing a mouth and nose protector is not required – but we strongly recommend it. Masks are obligatory on all ways within the user areas and when visiting the reading rooms at the TIB Conti-Campus site. However, in order to make learning as comfortable as possible for you, you can take off your mouth and nose protector at the workplaces.

Please understand that currently only members of the LUH in a limited number have access to the reading rooms at the TIB Conti-Campus site and that waiting times may therefore occur. In order to allow you access to the reading room, we have to record and store your personal data (PDF). If too many people wish to use the reading rooms, we will implement a process for registration/reservation for reading room use. Please note the information provided on site.

Please reduce your visits to the library to the necessary minimum and keep the appropriate distance in the rooms. Please pay attention to the existing markings in the entrance areas. Access to the library can only be granted to a limited number of people at a time. We ask for your understanding and for mutual consideration. Please remember that all measures mentioned are taken for your and our employees' protection.

Yes, items from the magazines and also from the open-shelf collections of all TIB sites must be ordered online, as they can only be picked up at the Circulation Desks.

It is still not possible to enter the reading rooms at the TIB Sozialwissenschaften (Social Sciences) and TIB Technik/Naturwissenschaften (Science/Technology) sites. At the TIB Conti-Campus site, access to the reading rooms is only possible for a limited number of people, so media must always be ordered online and collected from the Circulation Desk. Orders from the holdings of the TIB Geschichte/Religionswissenschaft (History/Regional Studies) site will be provided at the TIB Sozialwissenschaften (Social Sciences) site. It is also possible to reserve media that have already been borrowed online and to extend the loan periods of borrowed items.

Please note that it can take up to two days to make the items available: Therefore, please check your library account before you visit the library to make sure that the items you have ordered are available. To do this, please check your library account in the classic catalogue (OPAC), as for technical reasons the currently valid pick-up sites can only be shown there at present.

Customers of the TIB document delivery service can continue to order specialist and research literature from the areas of science and technology via the TIB portal as usual.

Yes, from 1 June 2020 you can place orders via interlibrary loan again without any restrictions.

Yes, this is now possible again, as long as there are no reservations from other parties for the media.

You can return your borrowed items to us quickly and easily and without personal contact. To return items, please place them in the designated spaces in the foyer of the TIB Technik/Naturwissenschaften (Science/Technology), TIB Sozialwissenschaften (Social Sciences) (limited lending service will start on 18 May 2020) and TIB Conti-Campus sites.

We kindly ask you to check your library account afterwards to ensure that the items have been returned correctly. Please bear in mind that we will need some handling time for this.

In order to give you enough time to return items or extend loan periods yourself online, we are extending reminders until 17 May 2020.

However, we would ask you to return your media – especially reserved items – as soon as possible.

The suspension of overdue notices and the calculation of fines is applicable from 17 March 2020 onwards. If you received a reminder and a request to return an item before that date, please contact our Circulation Desk.

The right to use the library has been automatically extended to 31 July 2020 for all users with a TIB library card that expired after 1 January 2020 or that will expire over the next three months.

In all other cases please contact us during the opening hours of the registration on site.

Yes, please use the TIB's online registration and then contact us at the Registration Desk during the opening hours on site.

All of the TIB's digital services are available as usual

By the way: Many publishers and database providers open up their licensed offers for a limited period of time by removing restrictions on certain user groups or by expanding the range of offers.

As a member of Leibniz Universität Hannover you can  use our photocopy delivery service.

In the search system of the TIB portal you will also find many media in free access. In addition, there are various ways of finding literature published in Open Access.

You can use the TIB document delivery service to order specialist and research literature in the fields of technology and the natural sciences from the TIB's holdings for a fee via the TIB portal, or you can use the TIB's fee-based digital single item sales service.

Many digital resources are licensed and therefore only available to members of the Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH).

Employees of LUH gain access by registering with a valid library card.

Students of LUH also have the possibility to access licensed offers from off campus via VPN. Electronic full texts can thus be found and downloaded via the TIB portal.

In the search system of the TIB portal you will also find many media in free access.

In the TIB blog , our staff members show in numerous articles what possibilities there are for accessing literature despite library closures, and how to organise everyday learning and research from home.

We provide information about events and new articles on our website and via social media (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter).
