The first stop on his journey through Lower Saxony on the subject of Artificial Intelligence (AI) took Minister President Stephan Weil to the L3S Research Center at Leibniz Universität Hannover on 12 February 2020. "At the L3S, not only technical questions about AI are the focus of attention, but also social ones," emphasized University President Prof. Dr. Volker Epping, who also emphasized the cooperation of various disciplines such as computer science, sociology and law in his welcoming address.

L3S Director Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Nejdl then briefly presented L3S to the Minister President and the accompanying journalists. L3S develops methods and technologies for digital change and researches the effects of digitisation. He showed how AI systems learn from data and which questions scientists have to ask for this.

Huge topic of artificial intelligence

"AI is a huge topic," said Stephan Weil, before informing himself about various projects at the L3S in a poster exhibition – at "Speed Dating", as the Prime Minister called it. These included projects of the TIB – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology, which works closely with the L3S. TIB Director Prof. Dr. Sören Auer presented the Open Research Knowledge Graph (ORKG), a knowledge graph that is intended to facilitate the exchange of knowledge in scientific communication in the future. Other TIB projects exhibited included the geolocation tool developed at the TIB for estimating the location where photos were taken, the Kompezenzentrum Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony Competence Centre) of the International Data Space Association (IDSA), which aims to establish a secure, trustworthy platform for data exchange between companies, and the projects TRUSTS and Platoon.
