After the ceremonial opening of the exhibition "Herrenhausen und Europa – ein Gartennetzwerk” (Herrenhausen and Europe – a garden network) on 16 March 2019, visitors to the Museum Schloss Herrenhausen will now be able to gain a special insight into the history of garden art until 12 January 2020.

For the exhibition, the TIB is opening its unique Albrecht Haupt Collection, which consists of numerous books on the history, theory and art of architecture, around 6,800 historical drawings and prints, as well as 6,000 travel sketches and study sheets by Haupt himself.

Albrecht Haupt (1852-1932) made a name for himself as a freelance architect and building researcher, as a university lecturer and as a research traveller.

A selection of around 130 exhibits – high-quality reproductions of the historical plans and travel sketches as well as several original publications on the history of gardens in showcases – can be seen in the Museum Schloss Herrenhausen: There are handmade travel sketches by Haupt as well as historical plans of gardens from the Netherlands, France, England, Germany and Austria, which illustrate the influence these gardens had on the princely summer residence of Herrenhausen.

"The exhibition shows library treasures from the 17th and 18th centuries that are otherwise kept in a protected area of the TIB stocks under special spatial and conservation conditions," said Dr. Irina Sens, Deputy Director of the TIB and Head of Library Operations, in her welcoming address at the opening of the exhibition.

Among the highlights of the exhibition is a view of Villa Medici around 1590 by the artist Antonio Tempesta, printed by the Dutch publisher Van Schoel in Rome.

The exhibition was created in cooperation with the Historisches Museum Hannover, the Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaft und Kunst Hildesheim/Holzminden/Göttingen (HAWK) and the TIB.
