Three young people started an apprenticeship at the library in August 2017. As future Media and Information Service Specialists (FaMI), specialising in librarianship, Christina Loges and Niklas Petczelis will familiarise themselves with the tasks performed at the library, such as serving customers, placing orders, cataloguing, and much more besides. Cord Ruben Plate is training to become a bookbinder, which involves a combination of traditional craft techniques and the use of modern equipment.
After their first few days at the library, Professor Dr. Sören Auer, Director of TIB, invited the newcomers into his office and gave them a warm welcome. The conversation with the apprentices touched on the wide range of activities undertaken at the library, the tasks performed by Media and Information Service Specialists, and rapid social change, such as with regard to digitisation, which also affects day-to-day operations at the library and employees’ future tasks. “TIB is an exciting institution with a wide variety of tasks where you, as apprentices, can learn a great deal,” stated Auer, who then wished them a good start at TIB.
