Today, digital databases are part of everyday working life. In most areas it is impossible to imagine life without them: whether in libraries, research institutions, museums and archives or in business and industry. An important task is thedigital preservation of selected data, which should be usable even years later.
This is where the Technische Informatíonsbibliothek (TIB) – German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB) comes into play as a reliable partner in digital preservation. Together with ZB MED - Informationszentrum Lebenswissenschaften and ZBW - Leibniz-Informationszentrum Wirtschaft, it operates a cooperative digital and certified long-term archive.
Current TIB publications on digital preservation
Digital preservation is a complex process. In Berichte zur Denkmalpflege (issue 3/2018) by CW Niemeyer, TIB’s Thomas Bähr presents digital preservation in his article "Digitale Bestandserhaltung – Erfahrungen und Möglichkeiten" (PDF). He explains, among other things, how the archive was set up, which practical steps have to be taken during archiving and which services the TIB offers as part of its Preservation-as-a-Service.
In BuB – Forum Bibliothek und Information (11/2018 issue), Thomas Bähr and TIB staff member Franziska Schwab also deal with digital preservationg in the article "Digitale Langzeitarchivierung an der Technischen Informationsbibliothek Daten auf Dauer sicher und nutzbar aufbewahren – auch als Dienstleistung für andere Einrichtungen" (PDF). They explain the organisational, legal and technical aspects, the process of data preparation and describe an example of a workflow in the TIB's ong-terml preservation.
