The Technische Informationsbibliothek (TIB) – German National Library of Science and Technology became a member of the DBpedia Association in October 2017. The organisation was founded in 2014 with the aim of supporting the DBpedia project and the DBpedia community, professionalising DBpedia for users, providing free data and services to the public and forming an effective network out of the loosely organised DBpedia community.
In the Linked Open Data Project DBpedia, the structured information of Wikipedia such as tables, geographical coordinates or info boxes are extracted and made available online in the form of a knowledge graph. This data derived from Wikipedia enables sophisticated queries to be made as a database – also in connection with data from other web applications.
„With our DBpedia membership, we as TIB support the further development of DBpedia and the active DBpedia community, without which this important Linked Open Data project would not be possible at all“, says Prof. Dr. Sören Auer, Director of the TIB. Prof. Auer is one of the founders of the DBpedia project launched in 2007 and, since 2015, has been one of 17 members of the DBpedia Association's Board of Trustees, the decision-making body, which is involved in the goals and concerns of the DBpedia Association.
