The Technische Informationsbibliothek (TIB) – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology – Program Area C, Research and Development, is looking to employ a
Marie Skłodowska-Curie Early Stage Researcher (Ph.D. Research Position) (m/f/d)
to join the Visual Analytics Research Group (Prof. Dr. Ralph Ewerth) at the earliest possible opportunity (latest start: July 1st, 2021) and subject to the final approval of the third-party funding. The PhD candidate will be co-supervised by Prof. Dr. Jens Lehmann from the University of Bonn, Germany.
The position is initially limited to 1,5 years with envisioned extension. The regular weekly working time is 39.8 hours (full-time). The remuneration is based on pay scale group 13 TV-L.
Your tasks
The doctoral candidate is working on a PhD within the framework of the Innovative Training Network (ITN) CLEOPATRA: "Cross-lingual Event-centric Open Analytics Research Academy" (http://cleopatra-project.eu/) funded by the European Union (EU). A description of the PhD topic can be found below.
The CLEOPATRA ITN offers a unique interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral research and training programme, which will explore how we can analyse and understand major events that influence and shape our lives and our societies. It will facilitate advanced cross-lingual processing of textual and visual information related to key contemporary events at scale, and will develop innovative methods for efficient and intuitive user access to and interaction with multilingual information.
Dependent on the individual research project, successful candidates will have a strong background in Computer Science or Digital Humanities (an outstanding MSc degree in the corresponding discipline). Good proficiency in English is expected; knowledge of further European languages is of advantage. International experience during your studies or afterwards as well as good social and communication skills are helpful.
As a successful candidate, you will
- Conduct research on your PhD topic at TIB in the context of the CLEOPATRA project.
- Provide important input to the development of integrated cross-lingual data analytics platforms.
- Actively participate in the training programme offered by the CLEOPATRA ITN.
- Engage with researchers at CLEOPATRA partner organisations across the EU.
- Conduct research visits and secondments according to the individual career development plan.
PhD topic: Multimodal fact validation across multilingual corpora
Unimodal systems that process natural language predominate in research on fact validation – but events are rarely described by text alone and often include visual information as well. The co-existence of multiple modalities creates an opportunity to implement machine learning systems that retrieve, combine and model diverse inputs. Fact validation systems that process multiple modalities are able to assess additional evidence, learn rich representations and conduct supplementary analyses on source data.
Your qualities
- A successfully completed, subject related university degree (Master or comparable), e. g. in Computer Science or related fields of study
- Very good technical knowledge in Computer Science
- Good command of written and spoken English; knowledge of other European languages is an advantage
- Good social and especially communication skills
Desired additions to your profile
- Interest in digital humanities topics or interdisciplinary work is helpful
- International experience during your studies or afterwards is an advantage
- Familiarity with one or more of the following areas: (multimodal) data analysis, natural language processing, computer vision, machine learning, semantic technologies or human-machine interaction
Mobility Requirements
To be eligible the applicant must satisfy the mobility requirements of Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions, as explained in full detail on pages 6 to 20. According to these guidelines, at the time of recruitment, the potential candidate “must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the recruiting beneficiary for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention (1951) are not taken into account.” Furthermore, according to the Marie Skłodowska-Curie rules, Early-Stage Researchers shall, at the time of recruitment by the host organisation, “be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree”.
