Research Software Engineer (m/f/d)
to join the Knowledge Infrastructures Research Group (Dr. Markus Stocker) at the next possible date.
The position is initially limited to three years with envisioned extension. The regular weekly working time is 39.80 hours (full-time). The position is generally suitable for part-time work. The remuneration is based on pay scale group 13 TV-L.
Your challenge
BITS - BluePrints for the Integration of Terminology Services in Earth System Sciences - is a new project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) that addresses a major remaining obstacle to the application of the FAIR principles in Earth System Science: Little data interoperability due to lack of formal semantics of research data. As a member of the BITS project team, you will contribute to establishing the TIB Terminology Service (TS) in climate science and geoscientific collections, and integrate the TS in data repositories of the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ) and the Senckenberg - Leibniz Institution for Biodiversity and Earth System Research (SGN). The experiences gained will be used to create blueprints that can later serve to link other Earth System Science repositories.
Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to
- Drive the integration of the TIB TS in the Open Research Knowledge Graph (ORKG), for Earth System Sciences and other research fields.
- More generally contribute to ORKG development, and be part of an exceptional team of doctoral students and research software engineers.
- Contribute to and represent BITS, ORKG and TIB in international initiatives, such as RDA and FDOF.
Your qualities
We are looking for creative thinkers, efficient doers, able to grasp new knowledge quickly, combine abstract reasoning with concrete problem solving, interested in tackling complex challenges, with solid academic writing and communication skills. Your competences and research interests should be rooted in computer sciences and data science or similar, with demonstrable interest in research data, its management, and the implementation of the FAIR data principles.
Required qualifications
- Successfully completed university degree (Master’s degree or comparable) in a relevant field of study such as informatics, computer science or a comparable field with excellent grades.
- Demonstrable excellent software development skills in frontend development (e.g. using React) and/or web-based API and backend development (e.g. using Kotlin, Java Spring Boot, database technologies) as well as script-based data processing and analysis (especially in Python or R).
- Good command of Semantic Web technologies, the development and management of ontologies and related technologies and tooling such as graph databases.
- Demonstrable understanding of data and metadata standards commonly used in research data management, in particular those relevant to the Earth System Sciences community, and related technologies such as persistent identifier systems.
- Demonstrable interest in working with research communities, understanding their needs and translating their requirements into high quality digital services.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English as well as excellent communication skills.
Desirable additions to your profile
- Broad applied understanding of techniques in Artificial Intelligence.
- Work experience in larger teams, in academia and/or industry.
- Knowledge of the German language is an advantage, but not necessary.
