A look back, a look forward: The end of ORCID DE is the beginning of the PID Network

Project partners continue to work together on the integration of PID infrastructures and communities

How can it be ensured that scientific objects, persons, institutions or even conferences can be identified permanently and uniquely? This is possible with PIDs – Persistent Identifiers – such as ORCID iDs (Open Researcher and Contributor Identifier) for persons or DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers) for research data, publications or other scientific objects.

Thanks to the ORCID standard, researchers can be reliably and unambiguously linked to their research outputs such as publications, research data and software. In the ORCID DE project, which ended on 30 November 2022 after six years, TIB, together with partners, set up the “ORCID DE Konsortium”, which now has over 80 institutional members, and manages the ORCID membership for scientific institutions in Germany. With the end of the project, TIB will take over the developed German-language information platform www.orcid-de.org and will continue to be the contact for institutions from Germany regarding ORCID.

In addition to setting up the “ORCID DE Konsortium”, the project partners have organised numerous information events since 2016, developed the “ORCID DE Monitor” and promoted the dissemination of ORCID iD in Germany as well as the networking of PID systems.

The ORCID DE partners – in addition to the TIB, the DataCite, the German National Library, the Helmholtz Open Science Office and Bielefeld University Library – have joined forces in another DFG project, the PID Network, which aims to further promote the networking of PID infrastructures and communities.
