Now it's official: TIB – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology is a member of the registered association "National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) e. V.", which was founded by the federal and state governments at TIB in Hannover in October 2020. TIB is looking forward to many exciting challenges concerning the topic of research data management, an area in which TIB has been active for more than 15 years.
The purpose of the association, which is based in Karlsruhe, is to establish and further develop research data management. In the "National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI)" initiative, the valuable scientific and research data resources for the entire German science system are systematically made accessible, linked and made usable in a sustainable and qualitative manner. Until now, these data have mostly been decentralised, project-related or only available for a certain period of time. The Federal Government and the federal states are jointly promoting the NFDI and, with this digital knowledge repository, are creating an absolutely essential basis for new research questions, findings and innovations.
TIB has been actively involved in the development of the NFDI from the very beginning and is itself a member of three NFDI consortia: the Chemistry Consortium (NFDI4Chem), the Consortium for Research Data on Material and Immaterial Cultural Assets (NFDI4Culture) and the National Research Data Infrastructure for the Engineering Sciences (NFDI4Ing).
