Since 1 July 2019 Dr. Ina Blümel is a Professor for "Linked Data in Information Science" at the Faculty III – Media, Information and Design of Hochschule Hannover – University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HsH). She was appointed together with the TIB – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology. In this cooperative professorship, she teaches Digital Research Infrastructures, Open Science and Open Access in the bachelor's programme in Information Management.
Professorship for Dr. Ina Blümel at the Hochschule Hannover – University of Applied Sciences and Arts
Ina Blümel studied architecture in Braunschweig, Milan and Helsinki with focus on digital planning tools. Afterwards she did her doctorate at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin at the School of Library and Information Science (IBI) on Linked Data for Architecture Information. She has practical experience in science and business. Since 2006 she has been working at the TIB in the research and development department, mostly in the field of digital libraries, among others for the lighthouse project Probado funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). She was significantly involved in the set-up of the Competence Center for Non-textual Materials and the Open Science Lab at TIB.
"We are very pleased that Dr. Blümel's appointment will enable us to expand the range of courses offered to our students. The cooperation professorship with the TIB is proof of our excellent networking with external partners, which offers our students very good practical orientation and prepares them for the working environments of tomorrow," emphasises Prof. Dr. Josef von Helden, President of the Hochschule Hannover – University of Applied Sciences and Arts. "For the TIB with over 500 employees, the recruitment of qualified junior staff in the field of information sciences is of central importance and we also hope that the joint supervision of theses in the innovative subject areas of the professorship will provide us with fresh impetus," says TIB Director Prof. Dr. Sören Auer.
Blümel already for five years as a lecturer at the HsH
Ina Blümel has been active in teaching in Information Management at HsH since 2014. As an acting professor, she was International Coordinator of the Information and Communication Department for three years. In 2016, she co-founded a project to enlarge the number of Information Management courses in English language and to integrate refugees at the Faculty. She is a founding member of the HsH research cluster Smart Data Analytics and participates in the cross-faculty working group Digital Infrastructure for Research, for example in the release of the Open Access Policy of the HsH.
In courses and projects, Ina Blümel builds bridges to information science practice and involves students in research and development projects. "I would like to develop and expand further cooperations from which the course of studies and the HsH can benefit," says Blümel. In cooperation with the TIB, the professorship offers a particular opportunity of shaping the curriculum.
Ina Blümel likes to give students enough room for creativity and unconventional ideas of their own and also help them to "look beyond their own curriculum and their own institution. I encourage them to get involved in community discussions already before the end of their studies," says the mother of three.
Ina Blümel is happy about a success right at the start of her work as a professor: She was able to raise research funds as part of the Lower Saxony doctoral programme to finance a doctoral position on the research topic of "Responsible AI in Digital Society", which is equally integrated in terms of content into the HsH and the Open Science Lab at the TIB.
