Competencies and tasks
TIB is an infrastructure facility for the provision of scientific information in Germany whose national tasks lend it importance for the country as a whole.
German National Library of Science and Technology
TIB's core task is to provide science and business with both elementary and highly technical specialist and research information. TIB has globally unique collections for the subject areas of technology as well as architecture, chemistry, computer science, mathematics and physics. The collections also comprise knowledge objects, irrespective of the physical form, such as research data, 3D models and audiovisual media.
As a University Library, TIB ensures that Leibniz Universität Hannover is supplied with literature. TIB's local services are primarily geared towards students, researchers and members of the teaching staff at Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH); however, they are also open to the general public. TIB procures and indexes items and information for all subjects at LUH. Theme- and target group-oriented offers are also available to specifically promote information literacy.
Research & development
TIB conducts applied research and development to optimise the services it offers. The aim is to ensure that its unique collections, featuring steadily growing data volumes, can be retrieved and searched in a sustainable, future-proof manner.
Portals and search tools
With its TIB Portal, the library enables users to conduct simple, cost-free searches in its own collections, leading professional databases, publishers’ services and in the collections of the German National Libraries of Medicine and Economics. With its TIB AV Portal, the library optimised access to quality-tested scientific films from the realms of science and technology.
TIB document delivery
TIB offers its collections to users in the simplest, most easily accessible way. Our customers can meet their information requirements at all times and from anywhere in the world. Access to the required information is gained directly online via TIB document delivery, by email or post.
Research data and DOI Service
Research data constitutes the basis of new scientific findings, and must not be lost. Thanks to TIB's DOI Service, developed as a world first, research data can be clearly referenced. With the objective of enabling worldwide uniform access to research data, the international consortium DataCite was established under the leadership of TIB.
Goportis Competence Centre for Licensing
In the context of its Goportis cooperation, TIB offers one-stop services on the topic of licensing electronic content – from licensing offers and negotiations to management and permanent availability.
TIB is the archiving library for its collection areas, and is a dedicated partner of the national digital preservation strategy. The objective is to ensure the complete, cross-media preservation of its collections. In the context of Goportis – Leibniz Library Network for Research Information, TIB operates a productive digital preservation system.
Publishing services/open access
TIB offers services to support scholars in publishing and open access. This comprises advisory services as well as repositories and means of financing open access publications. As a member of the Leibniz Association, TIB is committed to Open Access and has adopted an Open Access Policy.
TIB acts as a depository library for final reports funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi).
Patent Information Centre and Standards Infopoint
As the only Patent Information Centre in Lower Saxony, TIB is a cooperation partner of the German Patent and Trade Mark Office. In collaboration with Leibniz Universität Hannover and Hannover Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK), TIB offers a range of services such as information events on industrial property rights.
