The German Research Vessel METEOR performed its 23rd cruise from 4 February to 12 April, 1993 in the South Atlantic. The three legs of the "Geo Bremen South Atlantic 1993" expedition continued the long-term geoscientific project Sonderforschungsbereich (SFB) 261 at Bremen University, which is aimed at reconstructing the mass budget and current systems of the South Atlantic during the late Quaternary. Main objectives were the recovery of sample material from the water column and the sea floor for micropaleontological, geochemical, geophysical and isotopic analyses and the study of sedimentary structures using geoacoustic methods. Brazilian and South African scientists took part in these activities which were supplemented by a component of the international "Joint Global Flux Study (JGOFS)". This cruise report includes a summary of the research objectives, cruise narratives and preliminary observational results. It also contains extended tables on all stations occupied. The cruise was funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.
