Training and Capacity Building in Earth-System-Science is an essential part of the bilateral co-operation between Germany and Namibia that was agreed upon on October 28, 2010 in Windhoek. Within the project "WTZ Südliches Afrika" a research cruise with RV MARIA S. MERIAN was carried out in Namibian waters between September 22 and October 21, 2011. The upwelling region of the Benguela Current System is an excellent area to couple state of the art research with a corresponding educational program that covers the fields of physical oceanography, bio-geochemical and geological marine science. Students and young scientists from Namibia and other countries of southern Africa as well as from Germany participated in the cruise and the carried out educational program. The education program was divided into three cruise legs with foci on physical oceanography (MSM19/1a), marine biology (MSM19/1b) and marine geology (MSM19/1c). Each cruise started with a one-day seminar in the laboratory to prepare the students for the cruise.
