Following a brief review of the major disadvantages of various alternative power sources for telecommunication stations, the article compares three particular possibilities: solar generators, diesel-electric generators and systems combining these two sources. An evaluation of the cost of providing equipment of this type, in the case of Italy, shows that whilst all are more expensive than a conventional mains supply in normal circumstances, stations at remote sites can more economically use solar generators for powers not exceeding 250 W and diesel-electric generators (possibly combined with solar panels) at higher powers.
