The ability to manage subsurface resources depends in part on our knowledge of the formation and evolution of the Earth. This chapter describes the geologic history and structure of the Earth and then present concepts from petroleum geology. The density of rock in the mantle is greater than in the crust because the mantle contains primarily basalt, a dark volcanic rock. The lithosphere and asthenosphere are separated by the lithosphere‐ asthenosphere boundary (LAB). The three primary rock types are igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic. Each mineral is a naturally occurring, inorganic solid with a specific chemical and crystalline structure. Mineralogy is the study of the set of minerals within the rock. Rock heterogeneity is due to different depositional environments and changes in pressure, density, and composition of deposited material. The chapter presents the equations for volumetric estimates of original oil and gas in place and then define recovery factor (RF) and estimated ultimate recovery (EUR).
