Expression of glucagon receptors in tetracycline-inducible HEK293S GnT1- stable cell lines: An approach toward purification of receptor protein for structural studiesFNR HREF="fn1"> FN ID="fn1"> This article is dedicated to Bruce Merrifield, a mentor and colleague for most of my scientific career. He was staunchly loyal to his family, his research group, and to the Rockefeller University. He was an extraordinary scientist who believed in solid phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) the method he invented and for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1984. SPPS empowered organic chemists to study biological molecules and expanded the scope of synthetic chemistry research into the realm of chemical biology. The glucagon project that began in the Merrifield lab in the early seventies and continues today is a perfect example. Bruce Merrifield had no doubt that peptides would make excellent drugs. But ultimately, a three-dimensional structure of receptor-bound peptide is necessary to guide the design of these peptide drugs. The work described in this report is an important step toward that goal.Unson, Cecilia G. et al. | 2008

Conformational consequences of protein glycosylation: Preparation of O-mannosyl serine and threonine building blocks, and their incorporation into glycopeptide sequences derived from α-dystroglycanFNR HREF="fn1"> FN ID="fn1"> Dedicated to the memory of Bruce Merrifield (1921-2006). Two of the authors were privileged to be associated with the Merrifield laboratory at The Rockefeller University, GB as a graduate student and postdoctoral fellow through most of the 70s, and DL overlapping as a guest from another Rockefeller laboratory during the late 70s and early 80s. As such, they shared in the intellectual excitement of solid-phase synthesis developments. DL credits Bruce Merrifield in particular, and the laboratory in general, for playing a seminal role in introducing him to the power of this methodology, which facilitated many interesting biophysical studies in the ensuing years. For him, the collegiality and hospitality of the Merrifield laboratory were certainly among the high points of the Rockefeller experience. DL and GB are grateful to Bruce for his interest in, and encouragement of, their recent collaboration inLiu, Mian et al. | 2008

EDOTn and MIM, new peptide backbone protecting groupsFNR HREF="fn1"> FN ID="fn1"> One of the authors (F.A.) recalls a short and informal talk with Bruce in Braga (Portugal), after attending the Josef Rudinger Memorial Lecture delivered by Bob Sheppard, in which he introduced Hmb backbone protection. Bruce mentioned that backbone protection could be one of the solutions to make SPS applicable for all kinds of peptides. Hopefully, EDOTn and MIM are a step in this direction.Isidro-Llobet, Albert et al. | 2008
