; Circuit Quantum Electrodynamics (circuit QED) is a study of the coherent light-matter interaction in the superconducting electrical circuits. The microwave photon confined in the superconducting transmission line resonator can coherently interact with the superconducting artificial atom or quantum bit (qubit) placed inside of the resonator. It is a promising platform for the quantum computation because one can coherently control the quantum states of the qubit and measure them using the microwave photon, as well as mediate the interaction between the qubits. Moreover, it serves as an excellent platform to explore novel quantum optical phenomena. Because the superconducting artificial atoms or the resonator can be engineered to have certain desired properties, there is a possibility to unveil new physics that arise from the light-matter interaction. The ultrastrong light-matter interaction is a notable example and it is the main theme of this thesis. Because of the rather small fine-structure constant, the coupling energy between the natural atom and the photon can never exceed the energy of the photon. This is no longer the case for the qubit-cavity interaction in the superconducting circuit and several designs of circuit QED have been predicted to realize the ultrastrong coupling. Interestingly, the ultrastrong coupling changes the symmetry of the Hamiltonian that describes the light-matter interaction and gives rise to interesting physics. This thesis addresses the nonclassical properties of the ground state in the ultrastrong coupling regime. A variational solution that accurately predicts these properties for a wide range of coupling strength is developed to qualitatively understand the nature of the ground state. Another interesting feature of the circuit QED is its scalability. The modularity of the circuit makes it relatively straightforward to scale the system. The microwave resonator can be coupled to each other to form arrays where photons can hop from one resonator to the other. Moreover, the superconducting qubits can be placed in each resonator to realize the arrays of circuit QED. It turned out that the interplay between the qubit-cavity interaction and the photon hopping gives rise to strongly correlated polariton physics. This thesis focuses on the effect of the ultrastrong qubit-cavity coupling on the circuit QED arrays. We predict nearly degenerate ground states whose wave functions correspond the large-scale Schrodinger cat states and identify that the state corresponds to the Majorana bound state. An experimental scheme to detect and control the ground states is also suggested, and the effect of noise and disorders are discussed. The model that describes the qubit-resonator interaction is generic in that it is simply a model of a harmonic oscillator coupled to a two-level system. Therefore, it is interesting to ask if there is other quantum systems that can realize the ultrastrong coupling and examine the implications of the ultrastrong coupling. We find that a superconducting phase qubit fabricated on top of a torsional oscillator with in-plane magnetic fields can realize the ultrastrong coupling. We also show that the ultrastrong coupling can be used to produce the non-classical state of the mechanical oscillator. Finally, in a bit different context, we study the effects of strong electron-phonon coupling on electron transport through the molecular quantum dot. In this case, the strong electron-phonon coupling leads to the attractive electron-electron interaction. It creates a situation where electrons prefer to tunneling from one lead to the other in pairs. We use the particle-hole transformation to treat the pair tunneling process on an equal footing with other tunneling process. Then, we examine the nature of the pair tunneling by calculating the conductance and the shot noise. We conclude the work by suggesting a possible experimental setup where one can observe the pair tunneling process.
