; Nonlinear phenomena of Alfven-cyclotron (or Electromagnetic Ion Cyclotron) and Langmuir waves associated to solar wind electron heating and acceleration, current disruption related to substorm onset are investigated by making use of PIC simulation in this dissertation. PIC simulation contains parametric instabilities due to three wave interaction, particle heating due to wave-particle interaction by imposing Alfven-cyclotron waves, asymmetric particle acceleration due to wave-particle interaction by Langmuir waves generated by single electron beam-plasma instability and nonlinear evolution of drift Alfven-cyclotron instabilities in two-dimensional space by applying cross-field ion drift. Simulation results are compared with numerical analysis from theories explaining particle heating and acceleration by wave-particle interaction, parametric instabilities due to wave-wave interaction and obliquely propagating drift Alfven-cyclotron instabilities corresponding to current disruption events associated with substorm onset. In addition to the comparison between simulation results and theories, these results are compared with observational data. The homogeneous electron-ion plasma system including imposed Alfven-cyclotron waves leading to parametric instabilities, the plasma system involving single electron beam exciting beam-plasma instability accompanying particle heating and cross-field ion drift generating obliquely propagating drift Alfven-cyclotron instabilities are simulated by making use of fully relativistic particle-in-cell code. In regard to solar wind electron heating problem, nonlinear evolution of Alfven-cyclotron and fast-magnetosonic waves accompanying ion and electron heating is investigated by means of one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation. The simulation is initiated with a spectrum of transverse electromagnetic waves with both left- and right-hand circular polarizations (i.e., Alfven-cyclotron and fast-magnetosonic waves). It is shown that parametric decay processes lead to an inverse cascade of Alfven-cyclotron waves and the generation of ion-acoustic waves by decay instability. It is found that the nonlinear decay processes accompany small perpendicular heating and parallel cooling of the protons, and a pronounced parallel heating of the electrons for a relatively low ion-to-electron mass ratio. For solar wind electron acceleration problem, a plausible mechanism responsible for producing asymmetric electron velocity distribution functions in the solar wind is investigated by means of one-dimensional electrostatic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation. A recent theoretical calculation suggests that the variation in the ion-to-electron temperature ratio influences the nonlinear wave-particle dynamics such that it results in the formation of asymmetric distributions. The PIC code simulation largely confirms this finding, but quantitative differences between the weak turbulence formalism and the PIC simulation are also found, suggesting the limitation of the analytical method. The inter-relationship between the asymmetric electron distribution and the ion-to-electron temperature ratio may be a new useful concept for the observation. In addition to particle heating and acceleration problem, the present thesis investigates, the electromagnetic fluctuation spectrum associated with the drift Alfven-cyclotron instability by means of a two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation, which may be plausibly associated with a current disruption event on 29 January 2008 observed with THEMIS satellite. This current disruption event shows localized high-amplitude electromagnetic fluctuations with characteristics corresponding to the drift Alfven-cyclotron instabilities. The simulation shows that the drift Alfven-cyclotron instabilities are excited in two regimes, a relatively low frequency mode propagating in a quasi-perpendicular direction while the second high-frequency branch propagating in a predominantly parallel propagation direction, which is consistent with observations as well as earlier theories. This finding indicates that magnetospheric plasmas containing high density and magnetic field gradients and high cross-field diamagnetic currents, such as the current disruption region or recently observed dipolarization fronts where localized broadband electromagnetic fluctuations are observed, may be subject to the drift Alfven-cyclotron instabilities described in our study.
