This is the nation's first all weather axial flow turbojet engine, the General Electric J-47-GE-23, which is going into large volume production for the world's fastest bomber, the Boeing B-47 Stratojet. To meet the needs for the six-jet Air Force bomber, General Electric will produce the ""23"" at Lynn Mass, and Lockland Ohio and also has licensed the Packard Motor Car Company and the Studebaker Corporation to manufacture the engine. Providing considerably more thrust of driving force than previously announced for the J-47 engines now in production, the all-weather turbojet has a thrust rating of more than 5,800 pounds and also has a lower rate of fuel consumption than earlier models. This will provide future models of the B-47 with even greater speed and range. The engine has a ""hot nose,"" made possible by bleeding hot air from the compressor to hollow nose parts, which provide anti-icing protection. It also has a special ignition system which makes possible high altitude starts and may be equipped with water injection for thrust augmentation. (Englisch)
