Experimental study designed to investigate human electroencephalogram records during different psychological and physiological arousal levels was performed; measures of power spectra, amplitude density, and envelope of alpha activity were selected to describe many of stochastic properties of observed waveforms; 82 dimension pattern vector was formed for each of 21 subjects and 9 experimental conditions; pattern vectors for pair of experimental conditions, with one test subject removed, were used by linear decision algorithm to locate decision hyperplane; hyperplane's classification ability was evaluated using test subject's pattern vectors; this process was repeated using each subject successively as removed test subject; hyperplanes satisfactorily classified several condition pairs but, surprisingly, not eyes open/closed pair; classification of this and other condition pairs was significantly improved when transformations were made in terms of condition-pair differences rather than absolute values of pattern vectors; in general, variables from power spectra and alpha envelope measures were effective in discriminating, whereas those from amplitude density measures were not; discriminations as high as 21 of 21 cases were obtained.
