Safety has been accorded the highest priority at all stages of the Channel Tunnel project. Eurotunnel have had to satisfy the Anglo-French Safety Authority about all aspects of the safety of the Tunnel. This included the railway signalling and train control systems which are crucial to the safe movement of trains, and which are the most safety-critical software based systems in the Tunnel. At the outset of the project there were no authoritative standards for these systems, so that safety proving could not be a straightforward demonstration of compliance. It was necessary to bring two moving targets into alignment, namely the emerging standards for safety-critical software and the continuing evolution of train control technology, and assess one against the other. The author discusses the TVM 430 train control system and the development of standards related to it including integrity levels, documentation, and conformity assessment.
