ARTEMIS developed by Siemens Traffic Controls Limited is a computer based monitoring system which processes a video image enabling automatic detection of traffic events, such as congestion, breakdowns or accidents along with related statistical data. Incidents are notified as an alarm on the user interface, and statistical data is stored in log files. The incident and statistical information can be displayed in graphical form locally or passed to external systems for further processing. ARTEMIS can be added to an existing Close Circuit Television (CCTV) system and share the video information with other monitoring processes. The system simultaneously processes a number video inputs using a master processor and slaves. Image processing is run in the background on the slave processors, each of which can handle three video inputs. The system is modular so slaves can be added as necessary to provide the required number of image processing inputs. The user interface runs on the master processor. The user interface is provided on a desktop PC running a window based environment. The user interface display has a main menu and a status monitor. The main menu gives access to a live video window, configuration tools and an on line user manual. The status monitor shows the current status of all image processing inputs on the system and indicates if alarm conditions are present. (4 pages)
