The problem every potential 3G operator has to face today is how to either migrate to or build from scratch the new networks that will offer new data services and applications to mobile subscribers. There are currently two different core network architectures being standardised, one is being specified in the context of UMTS phasel or release 99, the other one will be part of release 2000, the so-called “all IP” option. While the aim of introducing data services and applications to mobile users is common to both of them, release 2000 tries to break with the legacy of the past 100 years of telecommunication networks by basing the core network on the Internet protocol, thereby introducing a packet switched network for all services, including speech. The possibility to use VoIP even on the radio interface Uu is also being studied to get an all IP solution for mobile networks. The operator is left with the task to select the best solution for his network, which will have to be based in most cases on existing infrastructure and its evolution as the operator-or rather his infrastructure vendor-sees it.
