During this reporting period, the first tasks on the project '30,000 rpm Vane Pump Demonstration' were started. These tasks consist of re-evaluation of design approaches prior to the design and construction of a pressure-compensated version of the pump. Experiments are underway for cam-ring-material fatigue-strength evaluations. Preparations are being made for experimental performance evaluations of materials and geometry of vane tips and cam rings. Efficiency calculations were performed to aid in sizing of experimental parts, and a computer study of vane-tip geometry has been completed. It was concluded that the cam-ring diameter should be in the range of 1.25 to 1.50 in., compared with 0.927 for the previous design. A fixed-displacement version of the pump will be designed, constructed, and evaluated in the laboratory. Additional variable-displacement cam-ring approaches are being considered. (Author)
