The aims of the project were: to assure the continued availability of the longitudinal New England Medicare Claims database; to improve the methods for the management of claims data; and to apply these methods to exemplary research problems. The project did maintain, extend and make available the New England Medicare Databases for research use. A number of useful software programs were developed including ones for 'Outcomes Analysis.' Numerous methodological problems were addressed related to: the completeness and accuracy of claims data; the feasibility of database linkage; and the validity of surveys of Medicare eligible patients. A number of significant methods were used including: cohort studies of hospital use; the use of maximum likelihood regression; and the examination of the power of various statistical tests. Other research included a study of the outcomes of alternative treatments for femoral neck fractures, long term outcomes and hospital mortality associated with coronary artery bypass grafts and trends in the use of radical prostatectomy in the United States.
